IF THESE CREATURES DON'T PUT ON A SHOW, THEY'LL BE PUT ON A PLATE!
When Jean-Remy receives a singing telegram from his long-lost sister, Eloise Yvette, the Creature Department is once again thrown into an invention frenzy. Rumor has it that the Ghorks have taken Heppleworth’s Food Factory hostage. And worse, they are threatening to make tasty treats of the creatures inside!
Elliot and Leslie lead the way to the town of Simmersville with Ghork-grappling inventions in hand. A grand Food Festival is in full swing, and the fanciest restaurant in town is serving a very suspicious Special. Elliot takes a bite, but when strange green hair starts growing on his arm, he wishes he hadn’t.
A very hairy Elliot, a blurrified Leslie, and our favorite department of creatures finally come nose-to-snout with the Ghorks and uncover a sinister scheme. But can they fend off the gang of ravenous Ghorks before dinnertime?
Praise for The Creature Department:

“Stunning. . . . a bit like if you took Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Monsters Inc. and shoved them in a TARDIS.”—Buzzfeed
“The creatures are a giggle-inducing example of an imagination run wild.”—Associated Press

“The creatures are the main appeal . . . and their antics, coupled with the strong visuals, will attract readers who enjoy imaginative, slightly silly fantasies.”—School Library Journal

“A literal Creature feature, with plenty of cinematic and digital spinoff potential.”—Kirkus

“A lot of silliness, a bit of rickum rockery, and a giggle of grossness.”—New York Journal of Books

Conflicts in creaturedom continue as a new attack by the nefarious Ghorks leads to an epic food fight. Also monster dinner-theater cabaret. This sequel to The Creature Department (2013) sends young hangers-on Elliot and Leslie along with hulking knucklecrumpler Gugor, fashion-forward fairy-bat Jean-Remy and the rest of tech company DENKi-3000's motley array of nonhuman engineers and inventors to a grand food festival in nearby Simmersville. It seems that the Ghorks-five types of malign creature, each being a single outsized sensory organ-are experimenting with an elixir that will transform unwitting festival diners into a Ghorkolian army. Scotching that scheme requires not only heroic battles with snot-blasting nose-ghorks and like foes, but putting on a show ("WE HAVE SPOOKY CREATURE FEATURES! / HORNS AND FANGS! / TEETH AND TAILS! / AND POORLY TENDED FINGERNAILS!") as prelude to a rousing climactic melee. As with its predecessor, the actual plot takes second place to the elaborate monster worldbuilding. Not exactly a rip-off of Monsters, Inc. but with plenty of shared DNA in the casting and dialogue, it's a yummy romp, served with generous sides of slapstick, satire and self-actualization topped with a dash of creaturely romance. (Fantasy. 10-13)

Elliot, Leslie, and the DENKi-3000 Creature Department receive an urgent message asking for help from their friend Jean-Remy's missing sister: their old enemies, the Ghorks, have captured the creature employees of Heppleworth's Food Factory in a plot to turn humans into slaves. Absurd inventions, odd creatures, and a wacky food festival enhance the endearing misfit story. Illustrations by visual effects studio Framestore are included.
