Rapunzel and the Lost Lagoon

Rapunzel is not your typical princess. For one thing, she has returned to her kingdom after eighteen years spent trapped in a tower and she's still getting to know her parents. For another, she has to get used to royal customs, like the proper ways to sit and curtsy, when she'd really rather climb a tree and paint. Plus, she hates wearing shoes. Cassandra is not your typical lady-in-waiting. As the daughter of the captain of the guard, she has grown up fascinated by security and weaponry. It has been her life's goal to become a soldier in the guard, and princess-sitting doesn't really fit into her plan—especially when that princess's aggravating boyfriend is always hanging around. But when Rapunzel and Cassandra stumble upon a secret lagoon said to hold the key to the kingdom's greatest power, it will be up to them to solve the mystery... before someone more sinister does. Follow this tale of adventure and intrigue, love and destiny, and, most important, friendship.

Rapunzel and Eugene return with a new adventure filled with friendship, mystery, and teachable moments. The story takes place soon after the movie Tangled left off. Rapunzel struggles with her new relationship with her parents as well as how she fits in as one of Corona's royal family. One of Rapunzel's first responsibilities, assigned by her mother, is to choose a lady-in-waiting. The captain of the guard's daughter, Cassandra, catches her eye since she, too, does not quite seem to fit into this world. One day, while in the library, Rapunzel comes across a small book of poems, dusty and long forgotten. She and Cassandra realize the title poem, "The Lost Lagoon," describes a real place that may hold the secret power of Corona. The young women try to find the secret and soon learn they are in a race against an unknown competitor. As revealed in chapters that alternate narration between Rapunzel and Cassandra, the two white girls struggle with their friendship, with their parents, and with their destinies. Young Disney fans will enjoy learning more about Corona and following along on Rapunzel's adventures. Howland has created strong female characters who can take care of themselves. For those who watch Tangled: The Series there is only one incident in the book that occurs in the TV show; the rest is entirely original to this story. A fun and lighthearted read with familiar characters. (Fantasy. 7-12)

Rapunzel has found her parents, but her adventures are just beginning. The princess and her equally adventurous new lady-in-waiting, Cassandra, find a secret lagoon and solve the riddle of the kingdom's greatest power. This companion to the Disney Channel's original movie Tangled: Before Ever After (summarized here via an interlude) develops the girls' relationship, but it's difficult to tell Rapunzel's and Cassandra's alternating narratives apart.
