Each hopes to surprise the other with a store-bought musical instrument for Christmas, and desperate times call for desperate measures. Emmet puts a hole in Ma's washtub in order to join a jug band, and Ma hocks Emmet's tool chest to buy material for a dress, each secretly entering the local Christmas Eve talent show hoping to win the cash prize.
