The ancient hidden city of Derinkuyu, Turkey, was forgotten for centuries until a man discovered a hidden wall while doing renovations on his home in 1963. Ancient Underground Structures uses cutaway illustrations to detail the hidden history of ancient structures, used by such people as troglodytes who inhabited underground churches, markets, mines, and burial chambers.

Grades 4-6 Noting that there's little left to explore on the face of the earth, this slender volume from the Underground Worlds series (6 titles) looks at impressive structures such as tombs, tunnels, and living spaces built below ground level, mainly in ancient times. Each double-page spread introduces a site in England, France, Turkey, Egypt, Iran, Italy, Malta, Mexico, or Peru. While some of these places, such as the Catacombs of Paris, have been known for centuries, relatively recent discoveries include a complex of homes and booby-trapped tunnels found beneath Nushabad, Iran, in 2004, and a tunnel uncovered in 2003 at the Temple of the Plumed Serpent, an ancient Maya site in Mexico. Colorful photos and digital diagrams illustrate the succinct text. Armchair adventurers may want to visit these intriguing subterranean destinations.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
