Railway Modeller

Nov 01 2025
Magazine

Still Britain's most popular model railway monthly magazine with over 800 issues published since it was launched. Always at the very heart of the hobby, and justly proud of its policy to cover all the scales and gauges and topics of interest to both ready-to-run enthusiasts and kit and scratchbuilders alike.

RAILWAY MODELLER

Welcome • Small is beautiful

Penworth • MARK BUTLER spent three decades creating this exquisite model of a Great Western branch line terminus in N gauge, much of the scenery for which was inspired by the celebrated Vale Scene at Pendon Museum in Oxfordshire. The layout is set to appear at the Rail-Ex Taunton show this October.

Making a start in OO9 • Using a Peco OO9 Setrack starter set as his starting point, JAMES WALKER created this self-contained North Wales narrow gauge scene in just 100 x 75cm.

Scottish sojourn • CHRIS FORD begins the construction of an OO gauge layout inspired by the railways of the West Highlands. The project makes extensive use of commercially available items, including many from the Peco range. Chris makes a start this month by building the baseboards.

Return to Allerton Gardens • We first visited this home-based OO gauge BR Eastern Region layout in the February 2013 issue. For this return visit, its builder, DAVID DOBBS , takes us on a tour of the Motive Power Depot, which has been expanded considerably during the intervening years.

Churchward Star Class 4-6-0 • To complement John Cockcroft’s constructional article for one of these locomotives (see p882), we present these 4mm scale drawings for the class that were prepared – together with accompanying prototype notes – by the late IAN BEATTIE .

A Churchward Star Class 4-6-0 in 7mm • JOHN COCKCROFT begins the construction of a David Andrews etched kit for one of these Great Western Railway four-cylinder machines, this class of locomotives forming the subject of our Scale Drawings feature on p878. In this first instalment, John describes the construction of the tender and makes a start on the locomotive chassis.

Kimbolton • A former station on the line that once ran east from Kettering to Huntingdon and Cambridge, modelled in OO by ANDY MOORE and members of St Neots Model Railway Club. The layout will be in action at the Spalding Model Railway Exhibition on 1 & 2 November.

FROM THE ARCHIVE • TOBY JENNINGS delves into the RM Digital Archive to look back at historic issues of the magazine.

Taking railway modelling to new heights • Every year, tens of thousands of individuals attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. However, of all those who conquer this, the highest mountain in Africa and the highest freestanding mountain in the world, Tim Williams claims to be the first to have taken a working model railway to its summit. Here he explains how, and why, he embarked upon this unusual challenge…

Cambois Bay

Golden Jubilee for New Forest MRS • PHIL KEMPSEY takes us back to the 1970s and the founding of this Hampshire-based model railway society, which is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a special exhibition this November.

A first layout in N gauge • Constructed by SIMON KIRK using Peco Setrack, Kings Meaburn is an example of an ideal starter project for someone who is new to the hobby and looking to build their first model railway.

Building a BR 13-ton hopper wagon kit in O • Having tackled the 4mm scale version in the July 2021 issue of RAILWAY MODELLER, CALLUM WILLCOX assembles this latest addition to the extensive range of Parkside (by Peco) plastic rolling stock kits for 7mm scale – supplied complete with wheels, bearings and transfers.
