Gr 4-8-Many readers will only know Leonardo da Vinci as the artist of the Mona Lisa when they open this book, but they will likely finish it with a greater sense of interest and intrigue about him. The book begins with a description of a grand party that Leonardo designed for the wedding of the duke of Milan's nephew, and it becomes evident that his life always had a bit of the spectacular. The author includes discussions of not only the man as an artist but also as scientist, teacher, and philosopher. His life is put into historical context with brief mentions of wars and political turnovers that affected his work and commissions. The last chapter, "Leonardo's Legacy," stands out as his achievements are put into context for those who may not comprehend what the past has to do with the world today. However, the color art reproductions don't always appear on the page where they are being discussed, and a sidebar discusses the mysterious identity of the Mona Lisa, which is dated since her identity was recently confirmed. Nevertheless, this is a serviceable introduction."Laura Lutz, Queens Borough Public Library, NY"

This book offers a serviceable if bland biography of the Renaissance master painter and inventor. The writing is straightforward, and frequent sidebars help with historical context. Some artwork reproductions and archival materials also break up the pages. Reading list, timeline. Bib., glos., ind.
