3 FOR THE GARDEN…
December palnts • In the last of his series sharing highlights from his own garden, Dan Pearson selects an early flowering snowdrop, translucent seedpods and a winter-flowering iris
GIFTS FOR GARDENERS • Find the perfect present for the gardener in your life and drop some hints for your own Christmas stocking
Enduring beauty • Piet Oudolf has transformed a former poultry farm in Berkshire into an all-season garden of contrasting colours and sculptural forms
GIVING YOUR BEST • ’Tis the season for gifting, and Nigel Slater has his eyes on the perfect present
MAHONIA • Content to grow in shady spots and poor soil, these unfussy evergreen shrubs with bright, fragrant blooms are excellent for lifting the winter gloom
CARLEY WOOTTON • New Yorker Carley is overseeing the move of the Story Garden from its current site at the British Library to a nearby brownfield site
FROZEN IN TIME • In winter, the gardens surrounding Brodsworth Hall pay careful homage to their Edwardian heyday, without sticking rigidly to the past
SEASON'S GREETINGS • Artist Fiona Pickles shows how, with just a few seasonal elements and dried summer flowers, you can create a stylish welcome for guests at Christmas
WINTER WARMER • This dramatic statement piece was created from materials destined for the tip. The Alchemilla mollis flowers, rescued from a neighbour discarding their plants, were cut in July and hung upside down in a shed to dry and my unruly Akebia quinata vine, having romped away a little too energetically, was well overdue a hard prune.
BALANCING ACT • This freestanding arrangement creates impact with easily sourced and found twigs, cones and fallen lichen. The hanging lichen baubles can be replicated on your Christmas tree to co-ordinate, or this could replace the Christmas tree entirely. It's important to use only fallen branches and lichen rather than harvesting directly from trees in the wild.
Winter haven • John Little's experimental garden is a sanctuary for wildlife in winter, when the structure behind its summer abundance is revealed
A CUT ABOVE • Topiary adds to the charm of Highgrove, but keeping it fit for a king takes skill, imagination and plenty of patience
FRANCINE RAYMOND • The acclaimed gardener, chicken fancier, designer and writer on a productive and sustainable life
A TOUCH OF FROST • As nurseryman and gardener Adrian Bloom reveals, the gardens at Bressingham develop a whole new dimension in the depths of winter
Design • News on the latest projects and sourcebook
The art of the edit • Robert and Anna Dalrymple have transformed the gardens around their Scottish farmhouse into a beautifully composed space that balances art with nature
Pergolas • Seek stylish shelter with our choice of the best frames, arbours and structures
